Found in shallow water in areas of sand, mud and rubble. It is active during the night. During the day it seeks shelter either by burrowing into the soft substrate or most commonly hiding inside empty bivalve sea shells, coconut shells or inside discharged glasses or tins. It typically has a dark colour pattern when exposed, contrasting with its snow-white suckers.
