Solitary species, occasionally during mating in pairs or small groups. Often found half buried in sand, rubble, silt and mud, with only the goggle like eyes protruding from the sediment. Sometimes seen walking on its finger-like pectoral fins along the soft substrate. Its colour is very variable and range from gray to brown and black to red and orange. When alarmed, it displays its brightly coloured backside of its pectoral fins as warning.
