Coloration is brown with dark stripes and spots on the body and white spots on the fins. Can be easily recognised by a set of long dorsal rays, which are spread in front of the animal when agitated. Solitary on sandy and silty bottoms of sheltered bays and estuaries. It feeds on benthic animals, including octopus.
